Gelbvieh females are renowned for their calving ease, maternal instincts, milk production and easy fleshing. When combined with their beautiful femininity, gentle dispositions, longevity, solid footedness and excellent udder and teat quality, Gelbvieh were a perfect fit for our operation. We think they are worth exploring for your operation as well.
For a purebred breeder and entrepreneur with more than just one business, a herd of cattle who preform with minimal intervention and supervision was appealing and that’s how we started our journey with Gelbvieh. We’ve never considered going back and choosing another breed and we never will.
Foot Scoring: We score our breeding stock using the American Angus Association Standard of 1-9 with 5 being a perfect score and remove stock from the program which are not with in 4-7 score range.
Teat and Udder Scoring: We score our breeding stock using the Canadian Gelbvieh Association Guidelines of 1-9 with 9 being a perfect score. We remove stock from the program which do not average over 6.5 between teat and udder score.
Progeny Performance: We track our calves weaning performance and remove bull calves which are not in the top 25% of weight gain performance, and heifer calves which are not in the top 50% of weight gain performance. We then take the data of calves which do not make performance criteria and remove females with cull rates of higher than 30% after three calves (1 of 3 calves.)
Body Condition: We score our females for body condition score based on the Beef Research Council guidelines. Ideally our females are 3-3.5 and their calves are 60% of their body weight when returning from pasture in November.
Temperament: With two full time jobs and often just on of us available to move, check, tag and sort cattle on pasture, temperament is key to our operation. We carefully monitor cattle for temperament issues and remove anything from production which isn’t quiet and easy to deal with.
