Rainbow’s Edge Gelbvieh is a registered cow-calf operation in Central Alberta. A passion for breed improvement and consistency, drives Rainbow’s Edge Gelbvieh’s breeding program and its involvement with the Canadian Gelbvieh Association.
Owner operators, Emylene and Michael, grew up in Central Alberta on and around the farm. Emylene started in the registered Gelbvieh breed in 2013 after working with commercial cattle. In 2013, Emylene worked cattle alone or with the help of friends and was delighted with how gentle Gelbvieh were and how maternal and self-sufficient the females were during open pasture calving.
A data scientist by trade, Emylene started tracking genetic traits and using genomically enhanced DNA testing to make breeding and selection decisions with impartial and strict protocols, which has lead to consistency and an intimate knowledge of her herd’s performance, maternal traits, and genetic potential.
Emylene and Michael both work full time jobs as well as have cattle and honey bees. For them, cattle have to work without being coddled. Firm selection standards make low maintenance cattle.
Rainbow’s Edge prioritizes maternal traits, genetic potential, and stayability over performance, knowing performance can be accomplished in one generation, but conformation, foot, udder and teat structure, takes more than five years to stamp into a herd with consistency. One generation of poor breeding can undo a decade of hard work building conformation and structural correctness.
Further, Rainbow’s Edge has worked with Abel Farms, to develop a forage program for the herd which forces cattle to do well on forage, or be cut from the breeding program. Yearling EPD’s are smaller (Weanling EPD’s are consistent) this route, but the genetic potential for performance of bulls and heifers is proven, instead of mitigated with feeding practices.
